"10 billion ways to make money online!" Sure, I'll bite. But what actually works?
Everyone in the online business world has something to say about how you can make money using the internet. And why not? The internet is a powerful tool, it's perfectly reasonable to believe a living can be made with it. But what do the experts say, and why does it seem do g**d**m hard?
Experts? Are they really?
There's some big names out there weighing in, and when they do it's probably best to listen. Forbes, for instance, has an article written by Jeff Rose about making money online. Even if you've never heard of Jeff Rose, being featured by Forbes means he knows his stuff - Forbes carries too much weight to let just anyone write on their website.
Entrepreneur.com, another heavyweight in the field, featured an article by someone named R.L. Adams. I've never heard of him, but I'll assume he's no pushover either.
Both of these articles have reasonable ideas about how to build a business online, and ways you could monetize a website, videos, etc. to create a modest income. Yet there's others out there with less credibility saying the same things. There are others still with completely different ideas, like The Penny Hoarder. They're not as reputable as Forbes and entrepreneur.com, but still hold a decent level of credibility.
So... which one do you listen to? There's a lot of good ideas between just those three sources. Even out of the 64 examples (some that may overlap), how do you know which one will work for you?
There's a few things every source includes, even if it's not highlighted in the article. These things are lightly mentioned in the business-oriented articles sourced above, and is usually in every marginally reputable article on the subject. Even un-reputable ones tend to mention three simple ideas in some way, which means they're so obvious they've become self-evident.
I've learned nothing is too obvious to gloss over. For thick heads like mine, something 'obvious' needs to smack me in the face for me to see it.
There's three simple concepts found throughout every 'make money online' claim you may not have given much thought:
It starts with passion: what you have the most revolve to do, is what will work for you. Why is that the most important? Because without it, you will lack the commitment to be consistent with it. Those two elements are crucial to gaining traffic, either by using time-based marketing (like SEO and social media), or paid ads. Without consistent content for your audience to come back to, no strategy will work for very long (if at all).
I challenge you to search for these elements in any articles you read about online businesses from now on! Tell me if you find one that's reputable but lacking these 'self-evident' components!
As I begin this anew, I know only one thing: that I know nothing. Learn with me, and together we will figure this out.
